One Month In: How Upsi’s Handicap System Is Changing the Way We Play
May 13, 2025
One month ago, we launched a feature we knew would change the way disc golf is played: the world’s first open handicap system, built into the Upsi app. And now, just 30 days later, we’re seeing exactly how powerful that shift can be.
More than 20,000 throws have been leveled so far. That’s 20,000 throws where skill gaps didn’t get in the way of fair play. Where every player, regardless of experience, had a real shot at winning. And the feedback from the community makes one thing clear: this is a meaningful shift in how disc golf is played.
"It's a lot of fun! I lost to a friend in his sixties when we were playing handicap. A lot of guys have said it's a good addition when you play in a group with different skills.” — Antton Mäenpää, Upsi user
A Fair Game, for Everyone
In ball golf, handicap systems have long been the key to making the game more accessible and competitive. Now, disc golf has its own version—designed from the ground up for the way we play today.
By automatically adjusting scores based on player ratings and course difficulty, the Upsi handicap system is helping bring that same kind of balance to our sport. Players are discovering how much more engaging games can be when everyone has a fair chance, regardless of skill level.
"With handicap feature there is always possibility to compete. I was very delighted of the accuracy of the automatic handicap rate, it was really spot on!" — Jani Luuppala, Upsi user
Play Smarter, Together
The system is planned to fit into everyday play. It doesn’t require extra effort. It’s automatic, intuitive, and available for all Upsi Black subscribers. And only one player in the group needs a subscription to unlock it for everyone. This ease of use means the barrier to fair play is now lower than ever. The result? More fun, more competition, and a stronger sense of community on the course.
"And as a woman I have to applaud @upsiapp's handicapped game mode! It's a totally different feeling to play when you can beat up the old man 😆" — @thg_fribaa in Instagram, Upsi user
All this is just one month and the season is just starting!
